Blackpool Pier

I’ve been wanting to get some long exposure photos of the piers at Blackpool for some time but for one reason or another the timing or tide times haven’t worked, but last weekend I had an early start and headed to the coast.

The first disappointment I had was that the big wheel that is usually on the central pier is currently out of action and has been dismantled, leaving only the supports in place which didn’t really look that great. So I decided to focus on the north pier instead which for some reason, despite it being a bit tired, I seem to like the look of more that the others.

High tide had just passed so I had a window of about 40 minutes to get the shots I wanted as the tide receeded and the stepped breakwaters started to emerge from beneath the waves.

I shot this using a 16-35mm lens and my Nisi 10 stop ND, with a medium grad ND just to try and balance the brightness of the sky. This was a 2 minute exposure to flatten out the movement in the water and then a simple black and white conversion to add a bit of mood to the image.

Hopefully when the big wheel is back in place on the central pier, I can re-visit and capture a similar image looking the other way.
